Dad

Our dad. My dad.

Dad passed away on December 30, 2018 after a long battle with heart disease and dementia.

He was my dad for almost 50 years. As we as a family have reflected on our childhood during this troubling year, we realized how much our parents were able to provide for a family of five on such limited means. This meant hunting and fishing for fun and food to feed us. Vacations were camping at the UP State Fair, where we splurged on Norms fries. Our house frequently rehabilitated with whatever paint or wallpaper didn't sell at the Sherwin Williams Paint store dad managed. It was a good childhood.

Dad was very passionate about whatever became new to him. Started with his relationship with Jesus and spreading the gospel, to discovering gardening or baking cinnamon bread in his retirement.

More recently his health took a bad turn with a diagnosis of heart issues and dementia. When my mom's cancer returned it made sense to move them both to the Jacobetti home for veterans. We lost mom this summer. It was tough for Dad.  Fortunately he gained a great roommate, Jim, who encouraged him to attend the events there and he had a good few months of adventures.

Today, January 19, 2019, was the formal church service. We plan to meet again in the summer when the ground thaws in eastern upper Michigan, his place of birth, and commit both his and my mother's ashes to their graves.
